Chapter 21

The next day, after I heard my dad leaving, I started packing my stuff. I called my mom to let her know what was going on, so if she came home and found me gone, she wouldn’t wonder.

“Let me help,” she said. “I’m making Daisy some breakfast and then I’ll be home to change clothes and shower. I can do your laundry before you leave.”

She made it sound like doing laundry for me was a thrill. Of course, you never knew with my mom. One day it was great, the next, who knows?

“If I don’t want to do it, it makes sense to take it over to the carriage house and Win can do it,” I said. “I can’t imagine that doing laundry is fun for you.” It certainly wasn’t for me, no matter how much laundry I did.

My mom chuckled a little and then sniffed. “I still want to see you. This whole mess is horrible. I heard a rumor that they’re looking at your father now because I’m his only alibi for the time Marty was…” She couldn’t even say it.

“I was there last night when we both got questioned. I was told to make sure the police know where I am.”

“Which means they’re so focused on us that a killer is walking loose. Landon came by yesterday when we got back from the funeral home. He paid his respects. He seems like a nice young man, but I can’t believe they aren’t looking at him. Marty dumped him.”

“I thought he broke up with Marty,” I said, trying to remember what Cheri said.

“Marty told us she dumped him, but maybe that was to save face. She was going through a lot then. We’d just learned that your Gram was terminal. You were coming home. Marty had had some trouble at work, too.”

“What happened at work?” I tried to remember. I knew she’d mentioned something about another hygienist who appeared to be trying to steal her regular patients. The two didn’t get along at all. If I remembered correctly, both of them had been talked to by the office manager and the owner of the practice.

“That woman, Darcy McClelland, was always harping on about Marty not having good technique or something. You’d think she’d know better because Marty got honors in her class. Darcy was always complaining to Dr. Pitts about patients she saw that Marty had seen. Dr. Pitts spoke to Marty a few times. After that, he kind of realized that it was sort of an issue for Darcy and told her to knock it off, at least that’s what Marty said.” My mom sniffed again.

“I remember her talking about it. Didn’t Dr. Pitts’ chat resolve things?”

“I think so, but with everything else, you know. And Marty. She wasn’t always easy going. She tended towards the dramatic.”

That I knew very well. It’s why I only sort of remembered what had gone on at her work. There was always someone who was making her life miserable and she didn’t deserve it.
