Chapter 21
The next day, after I heard my dad leaving, I started packing my stuff. I called my mom to let her know what was going on, so if she came home and found me gone, she wouldnât wonder.
âLet me help,â she said. âIâm making Daisy some breakfast and then Iâll be home to change clothes and shower. I can do your laundry before you leave.â
She made it sound like doing laundry for me was a thrill. Of course, you never knew with my mom. One day it was great, the next, who knows?
âIf I donât want to do it, it makes sense to take it over to the carriage house and Win can do it,â I said. âI canât imagine that doing laundry is fun for you.â It certainly wasnât for me, no matter how much laundry I did.
My mom chuckled a little and then sniffed. âI still want to see you. This whole mess is horrible. I heard a rumor that theyâre looking at your father now because Iâm his only alibi for the time Marty wasâ¦â She couldnât even say it.
âI was there last night when we both got questioned. I was told to make sure the police know where I am.â
âWhich means theyâre so focused on us that a killer is walking loose. Landon came by yesterday when we got back from the funeral home. He paid his respects. He seems like a nice young man, but I canât believe they arenât looking at him. Marty dumped him.â
âI thought he broke up with Marty,â I said, trying to remember what Cheri said.
âMarty told us she dumped him, but maybe that was to save face. She was going through a lot then. Weâd just learned that your Gram was terminal. You were coming home. Marty had had some trouble at work, too.â
âWhat happened at work?â I tried to remember. I knew sheâd mentioned something about another hygienist who appeared to be trying to steal her regular patients. The two didnât get along at all. If I remembered correctly, both of them had been talked to by the office manager and the owner of the practice.
âThat woman, Darcy McClelland, was always harping on about Marty not having good technique or something. Youâd think sheâd know better because Marty got honors in her class. Darcy was always complaining to Dr. Pitts about patients she saw that Marty had seen. Dr. Pitts spoke to Marty a few times. After that, he kind of realized that it was sort of an issue for Darcy and told her to knock it off, at least thatâs what Marty said.â My mom sniffed again.
âI remember her talking about it. Didnât Dr. Pittsâ chat resolve things?â
âI think so, but with everything else, you know. And Marty. She wasnât always easy going. She tended towards the dramatic.â
That I knew very well. Itâs why I only sort of remembered what had gone on at her work. There was always someone who was making her life miserable and she didnât deserve it.
